Why not every “cheap” PSU is a good idea?

Yes, you can find power supplies for the 1541-II for around 20 EUR. In most cases, however, these are generic universal adapters with a modified plug, not a dedicated Commodore 1541-II / 1581 PSU. Such units are typically not calibrated for the reference load of these drives, often lack proper 5V protection circuitry, and rarely take the 12V motor start-up behavior into account. If they do offer output trimming, the price usually stops being “budget”. With 40+ year-old hardware, saving 10–20 EUR is simply not worth the risk. Adjust & Protect Module option

Add the optional module for precise 5V DC tuning (4.9–5.3V), ideal for adapting to different systems and peripherals. The module includes a high-quality trimmer potentiometer and an additional power-good LED indicator, allowing fine adjustment and visual confirmation of stable output voltage under real load conditions.

For users who demand the highest level of performance and long-term reliability, we recommend the PRO version. Unlike the standard model, the PRO PSU uses a different internal architecture with upgraded DC-DC converters, higher-grade components and approximately ~2W additional total power reserve. The reinforced 12V DC motor rail allows significantly higher transient loads during spindle start-up – an important factor for aging drive mechanisms. The PRO version also offers more precise voltage fine-tuning and improved current distribution between the 5V and 12V lines, making it the ultimate choice for valuable and heavily used vintage drives.
