The original ZX Spectrum +2A/+2B used a heavy ~2 kg transformer PSU, while the +3 shipped with a stronger switching PSU to feed its 3" floppy drive. Even the best originals (typically around 5 V @ 2 A, 12 V @ 0.7 A, −12 V @ 0.05 A) are now ~40 years old. Ageing capacitors and drift can cause instability or dangerous over-voltage spikes that may damage custom chips.
